Some respiratory disorders treated with a nebulizer include:

• Reactive Airway Disease – Characterized by symptoms of airway obstruction or inflammation, it is usually caused by allergens or noxious fumes. Reactive airway disease can be limited to wheezing from allergies, but it also includes other more serious conditions.
• Asthma – Asthma, the most common chronic childhood disease, is a reactive airway disease that causes wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
• Bronchitis – Bronchitis is a common respiratory disease that causes inflammation of the bronchial tubes. It can be caused by a combination of reactive airway disease with a bacterial or viral infection. Patients suffer from similar symptoms to asthma, but usually with increased thick sputum production and more extreme fatigue. Smokers suffer more often from bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, sometimes called emphysema) – COPD is a permanent abnormal enlargement of air spaces and destruction of the alveoli in the lungs. It is caused by constant and chronic damage to the lungs, usually from chronic bronchitis. The highest risk factor for COPD is smoking. Treatment involves smoking cessation, a combination of steroids, bronchodilators from inhalers or nebulizers, and antibiotics.
