In order to obtain a commercial vehicle license, you will need to undergo a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical. Like a standard physical, the DOT physical is a general exam that focuses on your overall health and wellbeing. However, these exams have more of an emphasis on your body’s fitness for operating vehicles for extended periods of time. Before you can obtain a commercial vehicle license, the DMV needs to be certain that you can withstand the physical and mental demands of the job. This is for your safety and the safety of others on the road.
If you are in need of a DOT physical, call (817) 799-7273 today or just stop by Urgentology Care for a walk-in visit.
You will need to undergo a DOT physical if you:
- Wish to operate a vehicle that can carry 15 people or more
- Are paid to operate a vehicle that can carry 8 people or more
- Use a vehicle to transport hazardous materials
- Operate a vehicle that has a gross weight of over 10,000 lbs.
The DOT physical is valid for up to 24 months, so you will need to undergo a new one every 2 years if want to maintain your commercial driver’s license. Urgentology Care offers DOT physicals in Arlington on a walk-in basis. Visit us today or contact us online if you’d prefer to make an appointment beforehand.
What Does a DOT Physical Involve?
DOT physicals must be carried out by a doctor, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner. During the exam, you will be asked questions about your medical history and current medications.
Several bodily functions are evaluated during a DOT physical, including:
- Blood pressure
- Vision
- Spine health
- Hearing
- Swallowing
- Breathing
- Reflexes
- Heart and lungs
- Stomach
A urinalysis test and hernia check will also be performed. Depending on the results of your exam, you will be issued a DOT physical that will be valid for two years, or less if the examiner is concerned about certain aspects of your health.
