COVID-19 Treatment Options

Here at Urgentology Care, we generally recommend two treatment options for COVID-19.

Paxlovid Pills by Pfizer, Inc.

Paxlovid is a prescription of two antiviral medications: nirmatrelvir and ritonavir to be taken for 5 days. It is authorized by the FDA for emergency use for patients suffering mild to moderate COVID-19 disease in adults and children at least 12 years of age weighing over 40 kg (88 lbs). It should not be given for patients suffering severe disease requiring hospitalization. For more information, see https://www.fda.gov/media/155050/download

Although the FDA has also approved Lagevrio (molnupiravir) by Merck & Co. for emergency use, Paxlovid was found to be far more effective than Lagevrio in clinical trails, and regulators and guidelines recommended using Paxlovid if possible.

Paxlovid prescription is available at select pharmacies at no cost to patients.

Monoclonal Antibody Therapy

Monoclonal antibodies are designed to block the virus and prevent severe disease. They are authorized by the FDA for emergency use in patients suffering mild to moderate COVID-19 disease. Is administered through either IV or intramuscular injection, depending on what is available. In order to receive monoclonal antibody therapy, a confirmed positive COVID 19 test must be made, then a referral is made to the State of Texas Infusion Center.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Coronaviruses are a group of common viruses that normally cause mild cold symptoms including cough and fevers. They were first discovered in the 1960’s and named after their crown like shape when viewed on electron microscopy.

COVID-19 (also known as the Novel Coronavirus) is a new type of coronavirus first discovered in Wuhan, China in November 2019. Unlike previous coronaviruses, COVID-19 can cause much more severe symptoms and has an estimated overall mortality rate of about 2-3%, with high risk populations having higher mortality rates. Patients at highest risk are the elderly, and patients with other major or chronic health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease, etc.

Do I Have to Make an Appointment?

Urgentology Care requires appointments for COVID testing, however some exceptions can be made depending on your case.

Does Urgentology Care Perform COVID-19 testing?

Yes, and we now have made testing widely available. See below for a list of Covid-19 tests available at Urgentology Care and brief overview about each test.

Antigen Test (Rapid Test) - The test detects viral protein in anyone who is infected. It is made specifically to find any presence of harmful and contagious active virus cells.

Molecular Test (PCR) - The test detects for evidence of the presence of DNA and RNA. Although it's one of the most accurate tests, it takes a bit longer than others. However, this important is most effective if you have any active symptoms.

Antibody Test (Blood Test) - Antibody tests detect any known infections by looking at your blood. Antibodies are proteins that fight off harmful diseases and promotes a stronger immune function. Depending on when you may have been exposed or the timing of the test, no antibodies may be active in someone with COVID-19 infection. This is why Antibody tests should not be used to diagnose active COVID-19 infection.
